The World's First Diamond iPad

The World's First Diamond iPadThe world's first diamond iPad is already in production, though the iPads won't be available until April 3.

Mervis Diamond Importers
, who created the Diamond Dreidel we featured back in December, is planning to release this stunning design to the masses in very limited quantities in June. The Mervis Diamond iPad features 11.43 carats of diamonds, hand-set in this beautiful oblique micro-pave style. The diamonds are graded G/H in color and VS2/SI1 in clarity. This is fine jewelry you can e-mail from.

A number of diamond iPads are sure to be coming out soon, if the rash of diamond iPods is any indication, but the first may indeed be the best in this case. The design is understated and classic -- and unbelievably sparkly. Can't you see this becoming a family heirloom? Even if the handheld devices of the future are different, this will become a vintage piece with high geek appeal.

The Mervis Diamond iPad costs $19,999.00. Orders can be placed online here or by calling 703-287-1615 after June 1.

Saab Spyker 9+ Tribute Concept

What could a future collaboration between Saab and its new owner Spyker produce? A cross between a stylish Swedish sedan and a Dutch supercar of course. Eduard Gray, an industrial designer educated at Coventry University in the UK and now based in Saab's hometown of Trollhättan, Sweden, has come up with a viable vision for this automotive offspring. His long, lean two-door Saab Spyker 9+ concept car imagines an evolution of Saab's Aero-X enhanced by some of Spyker's exoticism. The design features a Spyker chassis with a mid-mounted engine and low down aerodynamics, including a system to reduce friction in straight line driving whilst increasing traction in cornering and braking. An enormous panoramic glass roof gives it an airy feel as well. Envisioned as a 2+2 model in the storied GT tradition, engine-wise it's speculated to house a V6 bi-turbo capable of producing over 600 hp, perhaps powered purely by ethanol.

Why Buy a Car When You Can Travel Via Jet Pack?

Martin Aircraft Company Jet Pack
Jet packs have been available before but this latest design from Martin Aircraft Company is perhaps one of the most affordable options yet for those seeking new and exciting personal travel options. Marketed as good for personal use, emergency services, and even the military, each duel-propelled pack boasts 200hp and can travel up to 30 miles in 30 minutes on a single tank of fuel. Plus the unit is light enough that no pilots license is required for use (in the UK, anyway), so on a nice day the average Joe can forget hopping in the car to go pick up a gallon of milk and strap on a jet pack instead.

The New Zealand-based company is looking to start production soon and hopes to produce up to 500 jet packs per year for sale at £50,000 each.

Christie Brinkley Unloads Bad Luck Wedding Suit For A Good Cause

Christie Brinkley is the latest celebrity to auction off the contents of her closet for a good cause. She worked with Clothes Off Our Backs to auction off jewelry, shoes and clothing. Of particular interest is a little garment Brinkley would likely rather forget, the beautiful white Armani suit she wore at her marriage to Peter Cook. The fourth marriage didn't work out well for the former model but that didn't discourage a bidder from paying $775 for the suit. All proceeds went to the American Red Cross.

Morgan Freeman Wears Bespoke 46664 Bangle to the Oscars

46664 Bangles for Nelson Mandela Charity46664 Bangles are taking the fashion and celebrity scene by storm because not only are they interesting and stylish but they support a good cause -- like the luxury version of a plastic Live Strong bracelet. The precious metal bangles support the 46664 campaign, which is an African response to the global HIV/AIDs epidemic and gets its inspiration from the leadership of Nelson Mandela, and its name from Mandela's Robben Island prison number (466) and imprisonment year (1964).

The bangle program has received renewed interest and attention after Morgan Freeman, nominated for his portrayal of Mandela, wore his bespoke emerald and black diamond 46664 Bangle to the Oscars recently. He's rumored to never take it off but also says he'll be auctioning it off at some point to further support the cause. The bangles come in a range of prices from $23.95 for copper all the way up to $12,900 for the platinum model.

Campaign Launched To Save A Historic Ship From The Scrap Heap

The SS United States once entertained the likes of John F. Kennedy, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, and Marlon Brando on its wide decks. Now it's facing the scrap heap. The formerly glamorous ocean liner is owned by Norwegian Cruise line which spends around $700,000 a year to keep it at a pier in South Philadelphia. Once the fastest ocean liner in the world (in 1952 the SS United States set a trans-Atlantic speed record), it is now an eyesore that could be dismantled and sold for parts. The ship was retired from service in 1969.

The SS United States Conservancy wants to save the ship and believes that the situation is urgent. Norwegian Cruise Line is said to have been accepting bids from ship breakers and a deal could be finalized by the end of the month. The conservancy has launched what they call an S.O.S. campaign to raise national awareness and funds to buy the ship. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that once the minimum bid for the ship was $20 million but is now around $1.5 million. The conservancy would like to raise around $3 million to buy the ship and keep it docked for the next two years. They are also looking at other ways to protect the ship if they fall short of the fundraising goal. Their plank owner campaign urges people to donate $25 a piece to buy a plank on the ship.

The SS United States is listed on the National and Pennsylvania Registers of Historic Places. One possible dream plan is a "public-private partnership" that would turn the SS United States into a floating hotel, convention center or casino. It's a risky plan, one that has worked well for attractions like the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California but not so well for the Queen Elizabeth II which was destined to become a luxury hotel in Dubai but now faces an uncertain future. The ship would require a major expensive renovation in order to be usable in that capacity.

Miss Russia Wears World's Most Expensive Crown

Miss Russia 2010
Last month a new lucky lady, Irina Antonenko, was named Miss Russia for 2010 and given the privilege of wearing what's being heralded as the world's most expensive crown. The large, white-gold headpiece features 2,358 diamonds and 14 rare pearls, and is valued at over $1 million. There was so much 'to do' at the unveiling that some wonder if the crown didn't upstage the new Miss Russia herself.

The 2010 Miss USA pageant isn't scheduled until next month (April 18th) but for a little perspective last year our crown featured 1,936 flawless gemstones set in white gold and platinum and was valued at $202,000.

Kate Middleton's Dog Swallows Expensive Gift from Prince William

kate middletonPrince William gave Kate Middleton a pretty pair of expensive antique pearl earrings for her birthday this year but she didn't get to wear them for long before her black cocker spaniel Otto decided to eat them for dinner. Just days after receiving them, Kate noticed the earrings were suddenly missing from the bedside table where she kept them. After much frantic searching she realized that Otto (who was on the bed licking his paws) had eaten them. Kate was horrified but apparently Prince William thought the whole thing was hilarious, laughing and telling her she'd just have to wait for them 'to come out the other end.'

And they did, in fact, come out the other end eventually but unfortunately they were chewed and damaged beyond repair. Prince William had originally found the earrings through a private dealer he'd tracked down personally, so no word yet on whether he'll be able to replace them (but I bet if/when he does Kate will find a new place to keep them!).
